Current Grant Recipients 2012-2013

These projects have been selected by our independent Grant Review Panel as those that will have the greatest impact in serving uninsured or underinsured women in our service area. Please note that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is not a direct service provider.

List of Current Community Grant Recipients

Project Access to Breast Care - Wellmont Foundation

The mission of Project (ABC) is to increase the accessibility of screening mammograms to women in East TN and Scott County, VA, who otherwise do not qualify for services available in their community.  The Project will serve a population of women facing financial barriers, lack insurance or are underinsured with high deductibles and/or high co-pay, and fall below 250% of the Federal Poverty guidelines.  Participants who qualify will receive a free mammogram.

Screen for Life - Virginia Department of Health - Mount Rogers Health District

Screen for Life will provide breast cancer screening and diagnostic services to women ages 18-49 in Smyth and Washington Counties, and the city of Bristol in Southwest Virginia.  The project will serve low-income, uninsured women with limited access to timely, high quality screening and diagnostic services to detect breast cancer at the earliest, most treatable stages.  Women targeted will include those never or rarely screened, who present symptoms, and are high risk for breast cancer.

Tell Your Mom, Save a Life...AND MORE - Laughling Health Care Foundation

"Tell Your Mom, Save a Life...AND MORE" will provide 200 free, screening mammograms for the underinsured and uninsured women in Greene County, TN.  When necessary, the Tennessee Breast and Cervical Cancer Program will provide follow-up procedures.  Thanks to this program, two obstacles preventing women from receiving mammograms will be removed: accessibility and affordability.

Screenings and Healthy Lifestyles Save Lives - Cumberland Plateau Health District

The Cumberland Plateau Health District (CPHD) will recruit, enroll, and case-manage rural, uninsured, low income women (ages 35-50) in the fight against breast cancer. CPHD will focus on providing 77 screening mammograms and 15 breast biopsies to the stated population.  The women enrolled will be seen at the 4 health departments in the Cumberland Plateau district: Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, and Tazewell Counties.  Every woman will receive a clinical breast exam, breast health education, and follow-up case management.  If diagnostic testing is needed, the individuals will be enrolled in the state's Every Woman's Life Program.

The Breast Screening and Treatment (BeST) for Tennessee Women Project

The BeST (Breast Screening and Treatment) for Tennessee Women Project targets uninsured and underinsured women in the counties identified in the Tri-Cities Komen area as having high risk factors and incidence rates of breast cancer.  Clinical breast exams are completed at the county health office and women are referred to area providers for mammograms and other diagnostics.  The goal of the project is to reach and serve at least 450 women in Komen affiliate counties; some funds are used to cover diagnostic procedures needed based on screening results.  Women diagnosed with breast cancer are immediately enrolled in TennCare for treatment.

Breast Health Outreach Program (BHOP) - University of Tennessee Medical Center Cancer Institute

The University of Tennessee Cancer Institute's Breast Health Outreach Program (BHOP) provides a mobile mammography unit that will improve access and reduce barriers to mammograms and clinical breast exams for Hancock County of the Tri-Cities Komen affiliate area.  An access database is maintained to track the results of each screening, even if follow-up is obtained at another facility.  Through BHOP's efforts, and the comprehensive care provided, breast cancers are being diagnosed that may otherwise have gone undetected.

Lenowisco Breast Health - Lenowisco Health District

The Lenowisco Breast Health Program will increase accessibility to breast health education for 200 women while providing breast screening and diagnostic services to 150 women.  These women must be low-income, uninsured, or under-insured, fall between the ages of 18-64 years of age and are ineligible for services through other programs.  Assistance will also be given to aid in follow-up care and navigating through the entire continuum of care.

Breast CARE - Wellmont Foundation

The Breast Cancer Awareness, Risk Assessment, and Evaluation (Breast CARE) Program is offered to improve awareness of breast cancer risk among underserved, high-risk women with a strong family history of breast cancer by identifying individuals at risk based on family history, providing financial assistance for genetic testing and screening with mammograms and MRIs, and offering education and assistance for pursuing preventative options, such as chemoprevention and prophylactic surgery.

Appalchian Region Komen Project - Appalachian District Health District

The Appalchian Region Komen Project is intended to increase the number of screening mammograms among the low income, uninsured, underinsured, and Hispanic women living in Ashe, Avery, and Watauga counties of North Carolina.  The program will provide funding for follow-up diagnostic testing and treatment for those with abnormal results.  Key activities include breast health education and outreach efforts in all three counties, with an emphasis on increasing awareness of the program to the Hispanic population.
